I Am Used to Deep Massage- How Can Such A Light and Gentle Touch Do Anything?

A little goes a long way. If you think of a boat on water, it is clear that it does not take a lot of force to move a big structure. The body is mostly fluid, and we are working with the laws of fluid dynamics. A basic principle in physics (Pascal’s )states that any pressure on a confined liquid is transmitted to every point in the liquid. An example of this is if you sit on a waterbed, and see how the entire bed shifts. Gentle placement of appropriate forces affects the entire system. Additionally, we are working to facilitate change in your body’s innate self-regulating mechanisms. To do this requires trust and safety. Using harsh or painful tactics to break through areas of tension may be appropriate at times, however it often evokes the body’s defensive response  to protect itself. We do not wish to engage another defense mechanism- rather, we are seeking to allow your body to resume a state of relaxed balance.

Is CranioSacral Therapy A Head Massage?

No- We address each person as a whole- including body , mind, and spirit. Although the CranioSacral system specifically refers  to the membranes and Cerebrospinal fluid that surround, support and protect the Central Nervous System (brain and spinal cord), it is a whole body therapy. Restrictions anywhere in  the body may distort the CranioSacral system, thereby altering the ability of the Central Nervous System to function as it is meant to. All body systems are regulated by the Central Nervous System, and we are assisting the ability of the body to regain its adaptability in all areas.

Is CST Different for Children?

The foundational principles in working with children are similar, but require additional expertise and modifications in techniques to be appropriate for their age and level of development.  Children offer a unique and different set of challenges for the therapist using CST. Your therapist should be highly  experienced with both adults and children , (which we are). It demands greater skill and clarity on the part of the therapist to recognize and work with the cues and signs needed to engage therapeutic healing, as these are more delicate and subtle in children. This work is an important part of preventative medicine, often minimizing any  common or potential problems.

How Is A Treatment Performed?

Treatment is very gentle and non-invasive, always respectful of the client’s needs and honoring their innate wisdom. Generally, the client is clothed and in a comfortable position. The therapist will evaluate and treat by placing their hands in a variety of positions on your body. Experiences vary from session to session. At times it may be very quiet and you may fall into a deeply relaxed state or even sleep, or there may be dialogue and expression throughout. You may feel a range of sensations, or recall memories or emotions that are pertinent to healing. Sometimes these may be subtle and at other times very apparent. Following treatment, changes continue to integrate for several days, and often several weeks.
