Collaborative Care for Mental Health
Bodywork can often be a vital component in healing trauma. The addition of touch provides a direct route to calming the “fight/flight/freeze/fear” response, thereby restoring balance in the nervous system, empowering healing, and enhancing integration of mind, body and spirit. We invite mental health professionals to consider how CranioSacral Therapy and SomatoEmotional Release treatments can support your clients with their healing process.
CranioSacral Therapy is an osteopathic approach which identifies and releases sources of tension that may be impeding the adaptability of the nervous system. By gently working with the soft tissues of the body, CranioSacral Therapy releases restrictions around the brain and spinal cord, allowing the body to self-correct and free itself of pain, dysfunction and negative patterns.
SomatoEmotional Release expands on the therapeutic principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of accumulated stress and the residual effects of trauma. Research has shown that the body often retains (rather than dissipates) physical and emotional impacts resulting from physiological, psychological or spiritual trauma. Initially, the body can isolate or wall off this energy as it works around these forces. Eventually, however, the body weakens or tires of this accommodation and can develop symptoms of pain, dysfunction or emotional stress in response.
These gentle, yet profound modalities facilitate the body’s natural healing capabilities. They provide the ability for the autonomic nervous system to transition out of sympathetic hyper-regulation to regain parasympathetic balance, thereby improving self-regulation and increasing neuroplasticity.
Our certified CranioSacral Therapy and SomatoEmotional Release practitioners have the advanced skills and experience needed to work with the more sensitive and subtle needs of patients working through issues of physical, mental and emotional trauma.
Q: What types of conditions can be addressed?
In addition to general self-care, stress relief and wellness, Craniosacral & SomatoEmotional Release can address a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:
- Stress management
- Life transitions
- Mental clarity/focus
- Physical pain
Q: What types of conditions can be addressed?
Using gentle techniques, our CranioSacral Therapists help release layers of faulty patterns that have developed as a result of physical, emotional or mental trauma. Once these stressors are released, the various systems in the body can return to a more natural state of balance, allowing patients to:
- Break free from patterns of stress and tension
- Relieve pain often associated with trauma
- Safely explore physiological reactions related to subconscious holding patterns
- Empower transformation by recognizing the relationship between mental triggers and physical responses (and vice versa)
- Experience calm from within and amplify the ability to self regulate
- Strengthen connection with the integrated “true self”
Q: What can your patient expect during a treatment with us?
The patient will be made comfortable and remain fully clothed while lying on a massage table. The practitioner will gently place their hands in a variety of positions to locate and release areas of tension. Patients usually relax deeply and may even fall asleep. As parasympathetic regulation and deeper brainwave states are accessed, subconscious emotions, memories or sensations pertinent to healing may arise. Often, profound transformation can occur solely through touch. However, at times, we may dialogue with the patient to help them connect with these unconscious patterns and develop more conscious awareness of them.
Q: What is our role as Craniosacral & SomatoEmotional Release Practitioners?
Our role is to facilitate connection with an individual’s innate wisdom and guidance in order to empower healing. Although we are trained to address the somatic aspect of tension patterns including emotions, cognitions, and belief systems associated with unresolved trauma, we are not licensed mental health practitioners. We refrain from any forms of “counseling” that is not within our scopes of practice. When dialogue is utilized, our focus is on the language of sensation and connecting the patient further into their experiences while creating and maintaining a sense of safety. We are mindful to use neutral language reflecting the patient’s precise choices of words and experiences back to them, and we never force any unwanted or unnecessary exploration.
Intensives and Collaborative Care Sessions Available
As a mental health professional, you can be present during your client’s CranioSacral Therapy treatment to assist them through their healing process. During these sessions, the CranioSacral & SomatoEmotional Release practitioner would assist with the physical aspect of the trauma work, helping address the “fight/flight/freeze” fear response and allowing you and the patient to work through resistance/barriers in the healing process.
Depending on the needs of your patients and their goals and objectives, we can customize these conjunctive treatments as one-off sessions or more intensive/frequent sessions.
These collaborative sessions can be beneficial when it is necessary to calm the body’s stress responses to enhance healing and facilitate breakthroughs in awareness and connection.
"As therapists we know that including more of the body and nervous system in the treatment of trauma is crucial, but can struggle to know how to include body work in our client’s process. I have worked in conjunction with Intentional Wellness to create tailored treatment plans and intensives for clients. They have gone above and beyond to collaborate with me as a mental health provider to help clients resolve PTSD, anxiety, complex and developmental trauma issues. My clients who incorporate body work in conjunction with their therapy sessions are seeing more complete resolution of trauma than clients who are not and have an easier time relaxing, self-regulating and self-soothing due to CST’s focus on balancing the nervous system. They also seem to fixate less and are less prone to getting stuck in obsessive loops. Most notably, clients incorporating CST seem to have increased interception and proprioception; expressing they feeling more embodied, more present and more clear minded."

"It’s impossible to separate our mental and emotional health from our physical health. The latest research in neurobiology and emotional trauma has revealed the importance of addressing the impact of trauma, depression, anxiety, and stress on the body. Our bodies can get stuck in a chronic stress response which causes ongoing psychological and physical suffering. CranioSacral Therapy can be an effective adjunct to talk therapy, in order to reduce both the physical and emotional symptoms of toxic stress.""

"I love working with Robyn and Kevin from Intentional Wellness. When my clients do CranioSacral Therapy alongside of counseling, they seem to move twice as fast, able to move past areas of resistance and fear with more ease. The intensives we have conducted with my clients have made a major difference with several of my patients, helping them achieve breakthroughs in their therapeutic process. Intentional Wellness is also fabulous to work with as far as collaboration, team communication, treatment planning, and overall quality care."
